Motivation and goal setting

successfully achieving your goalsIt takes a lot of coordinated effort to get your business going. Do you have what it takes to see your business through?

Setting goals is an important part of your business’s success, and it is also beneficial to boosting your own self-confidence. Using myself as an example, here are a few tips on how to achieve attainable goals in your business and your life.

The situation is… I work full-time at a 9-5 job (actually it’s 6:30 to 3:30, but who’s counting). I work at a steady job because I need money to pay my bills and all of my other living expenses. I don’t want to work there up until retirement because, quite frankly, I think I’m worth more than that. This is where my goal setting comes into play.

The goal is… Right now, I live in an apartment in New Jersey, but I hope to be able to build a house out in central Pennsylvania next to my parents. I figure, between me and my partner, we can actually begin the process in about 5 years. This is my long term goal and my motivation behind achieving that goal. But how can I achieve this? I have started a part-time business in which I hope will be able to create a nice side income. $$$ = house.

In order for my business to produce a decent profit for myself, I need to plan and set some goals. Sure It would be awesome to make a million dollars in one year, but how realistic is that? Not at all. Let’s start small.

The plan is… You’ll want to break your goals down from the large parts into smaller more manageable ones. For example, break a five year plan into five one year plans based on priority.

Starting with the most important priority, work on achieving one section at a time of that five year plan and then break it down even further into smaller parts, such as monthly or quarterly.

For me, I tend to think about all of my goals and plans in my head, which is okay but I forget a lot of them too. Writing your goals down and looking at them everyday will help you feel more in control and focused on attaining your goal.

Measure your progress After you have achieved a small section of attaining your goal, look back over what you have accomplished and make a note of it so it is visual to you. For example, if you are using ‘to-do’ lists or a monthly or daily calendar, write ‘completed’ or mark it with a green checkmark. This visual aid will provide you with the motivation you’ll need in order to complete your next task. Not to mention you’ll start to slowly build up your self-confidence.

If you use your computer daily, or use a pocket PC device you might want to consider a goal setting software application such as Achieve-IT Goal Software by Brad Isaac. After only 15 minutes of entering your goals into this simple computer program the software will automatically generate a personal goal blueprint just for you.

Why not start your own business?

It’s a fact that starting your own business can be an exciting experience as well as a scary one. Whether or not your business is successful depends on many factors. Let’s take a balanced look at the advantages and disadvantages of starting your own business.

Pros:

  • Be your own boss

You will be able to run your business the way you see fit. You create the rules for running your business and adjust them as necessary. There is no answering to anyone but yourself.

  • Set your own work hours

When you choose to work is entirely up to you. Suppose you have some family obligations to attend to. You can easily adjust your schedule to accommodate this.

  • Unlimited income potential

You have the ability to set income goals for yourself. If you find that you can comfortably live on a certain income while in your business, know that you also have the ability to increase that income depending on what business strategy you engage.

  • Can be started part-time

No one said you have to quit your current job to start a new one. There is no reason why you can’t start building your business foundation and acquiring resources to turn your side business into a full-time job for yourself.

  • Can be started on a small budget

If you start your business on a small scale you can reduce your risk of losing your investment while gaining the knowledge you’ll need to succeed. Building an internet presence shouldn’t cost any more than $20 a month. In some cases, even cheaper than that!

Cons:

  • Takes enormous amount of self discipline

If you find that you are distracted easily, you could find your business suffering or even fail. Staying focused on your business game plan needs to be a top priority.

  • You will work long hours

To be successful, you not only need to create your product, but you will need to research how to market that product. Lots of research on all aspects of your business is a time consuming process if you intend to make it a success.

  • High risk of failure and losing your investment

It is quite possible that the market just isn’t there to buy your product or services. Or maybe you just aren’t reaching your audience the way you should be. If so, there is no doubt that your business will fail. Unless you can predict what the market holds for you that is a risk you will have to take.

  • Uncertainty of what the future holds

In a year, 5 years or more, who knows what the market will be like? Will there still be a demand for your product or service? Will you still be interested in your business venture or do you see yourself doing something completely different?

  • You are the CEO and President of Development, Marketing & Sales, Production, Quality Assurance, and Administration

It is your responsibility to see that all aspects of your business are taken care of. From bookkeeping and taxes from product development and marketing, it is in your hands. Finding the right balance to all of this is key to your business’s success.
